The Stydd almshouses we found near the very old Roman town of Ribchester up in the Ribble Valley of Lancashire. They were built in 1728 by Sir John Shireburn to accomodate five Roman Catholic spinsters or widows. The building has a fine eccentric design that is made to impress. Apparently it is still used as an almshouse though I could find no way of verifying this.
